Explore Auckland - An Exclusive Guide

A perfect day in... Auckland, New Zealand

From dormant volcano hikes to glittering harborside views, this multicultural hub on New Zealand’s North Island is a great choice for both nature lovers and culture fiends.

What to see in Auckland

Chief among Auckland’s landmarks is the iconic Sky Tower, the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, with panoramic views for 50 miles from its 600-foot-high viewing platform. Back at ground level, a short walk will bring you to Albert Park, an elegant tree-filled oasis in the heart of the city center, or CBD. Another must-see architectural marvel is the Harbour Bridge, which can be glimpsed from various lookout spots around the city, though perhaps most charmingly from the Silo Marina at sunset, a quick stroll from the center.

What to do in Auckland

Start in the center of town at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, a futuristic building where four floors of gallery space showcase Māori and Pacific Island artists alongside international touring exhibitions. For a spot of retail therapy, a wander down bustling Queen Street will bring you to nearby Commercial Bay, a waterside shopping precinct where you’ll find a range of independent boutiques. From here, continue on to the Wynward Quarter, a newly redeveloped harborside neighborhood packed with modern architecture, striking sailboats and an array of restaurants for lunch.

While the city itself has much to offer, no trip to Auckland is complete without exploring the striking natural surroundings. A short ferry ride from downtown Auckland is Waiheke Island, an idyllic spot to wile away a blissful afternoon on the beach or enjoy a long lunch at a local winery. If you don’t fancy the boat trip, there are plenty of hiking options closer to town: take in sweeping views of the city from Mount Eden, Auckland’s highest volcanic cone, which can be reached within an hour’s walk of the center. Round off the day at the nearby Maungawhau Visitor Center for an insight to the geological and Māori cultural history of the area.

What to eat in Auckland

Many of the best bars and restaurants Auckland has to offer are situated in the CBD: try The Grove for modern glamour and seasonal small plates, or Dr Rudi's Rooftop Brewing Co. for a harborside tipple. Further off the beaten track, the city is home to some inventive dining experiences such as Pasture, a tiny fine dining restaurant in which guests can enjoy a 24-course tasting menu with local wine pairings. For more down to earth fare, the Auckland Night Market takes place at different locations across the city each night of the week, offering up a delectable range of international street foods.
